Before buying more homeschool curriculum, check your shelf. Here's how to take stock of half-used books and turn them into a plan you'll finish.
You went looking for a pencil and found three half-used workbooks instead. Sound familiar? Most homeschool families have a shelf (or three) of curriculum that got started with good intentions and quietly abandoned somewhere around chapter 6.
Before you buy anything new this year, it's worth asking a simple question: what's still in the books you already own?
Why we keep buying more
New curriculum feels like a fresh start. The pages are clean, the plan looks perfect, and this time it'll be different. But often the problem wasn't the curriculum. It was the setup. The book never became a clear daily plan, so it got harder to pick up each day, and eventually it didn't get picked up at all.
Buying something new won't fix that. A better plan for what you have might.
Step 1: Pull everything off the shelf
Gather every book, workbook and program you own for each subject. Include the ones in the closet and the ones you forgot you bought. Sort them by subject and by child.
Step 2: Find where you stopped
For each book, flip to the last completed page. Note the lesson or chapter number. You might be surprised: many "abandoned" books are halfway done or more.
Step 3: Ask three questions
For each book, decide:
Is it still the right level? If your child has outgrown it, pass it on or save it for a younger sibling.
Did we stop because of the book, or because of life? If life got in the way, the book probably deserves another chance.
Does it fill a real gap? If you already have something better for that subject, let it go.
Step 4: Turn the keepers into a plan
For every book you're keeping, list the remaining lessons from the table of contents, starting where you left off. Divide them across the weeks you have left. That's your plan, and it didn't cost a dime.
Step 5: Only then, fill the gaps
Once you know exactly what you have, you'll know exactly what you're missing. Now any new purchase is a real decision, not a hopeful one.
The payoff
Using what you own saves money, but it also saves something bigger: momentum. Finishing a book gives your kids (and you) a real sense of accomplishment that starting a new one never does.
Hey Juniper makes this easy. Upload the table of contents for the books you already own, and Hey Juniper turns them into a lesson list and a daily checklist for each child. Use what you have. Finish what you started.
